Upton Applauds Emergency Dredging, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Washington, November 18, 2022 | Caroline Banaszak (202 - 225 - 3761)

WASHINGTON, D.C.  – U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today applauded the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for awarding an emergency dredging contract to King Co. of Holland to clear the shoal in the St. Joseph Harbor.

“Awarding this contract is a solid step in the right direction,” Upton said. “St. Joe needs this emergency dredging, and I trust King Co. will do it right and will get it done as soon as possible. When I examined the harbor with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers last month, you could easily see that no freighter could safely make it in due to the additional sand and silt. With more than a dozen cargo ships scheduled to come into the harbor before winter, there is no time to lose. I’d also like to thank the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and our local shippers for leading the charge on this effort to provide needed supplies to last the winter.”

The need for emergency dredging was discovered last month after a 630-foot bulk carrier hit bottom when entering the harbor. Trucking the material from ports more than 100 miles away substantially adds to the cost of building materials for our corner of the state.
