Upton Issues Statement on Passing of Carol Stockman

Washington, June 14, 2022 | Jamal Ware (202-225-3761)

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today released the following statement after the passing of Carol Stockman,

“Carol Stockman was truly a force of nature, and her big heart, wisdom and political prowess is legendary. She was the matriarch of a most-respected family in southwest Michigan. For decades, her political expertise and support was sought by national, state as well as local leaders. Never did she fail the voters herself as a candidate being elected and re-elected without serious opposition. No one could out hustle Carol. Her fiscal and savvy skills as longtime Berrien County Treasurer were envied by peers across the State.

“As my first campaign Chair and on many subsequent re-election campaigns, she was responsible for keeping the wheels on track and I sought her advice to the very end of her life. But even more than her political skills, it was the down-to-earth way she led her life as a mom, wife, and dear friend, that earned the love and trust of so many. Her deep faith was her anchor.

“We all strive to make this a better place than we found it. She earned the right years ago to rest on her laurels, enjoy her family, and the land she lived on. But Carol found yet another labor of love with her extraordinary work to better St. Joe and Benton Harbor by raising funds to help families deal with the ravages of drug addiction. Her dedication to others has solidified her legacy for generations to come.”
