"I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.” This quote from Frederick Douglass has always been one of my favorites and is certainly pertinent today.
The bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus (PSC) released the following statement on racial justice in America, which you can see HERE. As you may recall, we had a lengthy zoom call with the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus (CBC) last week to discuss their initial effort on a legislative proposal which was unveiled at a major press conference this morning. It is expected that the House Judiciary Committee will conduct a hearing on this legislation later this week and “mark it up” as early as next week. Though I have not read the 180-page draft, there are a number of provisions that I do and can support as it relates to moving our nation forward rather than standing still. It is certainly unclear as to whether this legislative package moves to the “left” or to the “right."
A few more clips from today:
—The Treasury Department announced more than 159 million economic stimulus checks totaling $267 billion have been distributed to eligible Americans since the CARES legislation was passed, which you can see HERE.
—The FDA posted test performance data from an independent validation study with the NIH’s National Cancer Institute on four more antibody test kits. This stems from a major collaborative effort between the FDA, NIH, CDC, and BARDA, which you can see HERE. NIH Director Francis Collins released a blog post on the need for reliable antibody testing for COVID-19 and the post includes a condensed transcript of a conversation between Collins and National Cancer Institute Director Dr. Norman Sharpless who is responsible for the $1.8-billion NIH program to establish a “shark tank” method to evaluate private sector initiatives for home testing. You will recall that we have at least one Michigan entity with a patented device that is seeking such approval, and I am helping them navigate this program. In my view, this development will be a “game changer” for folks to know if they have been exposed. You can read that blog post HERE.
—The CDC has awarded $140 million to 64 jurisdictions through its existing immunization cooperation agreement allowing state health departments to launch an initial scale-up for the flu season with a focus on vulnerable populations, which you can see HERE.
—The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) announced it has sent warning letters to 35 more drug marketers to stop making unsubstantiated claims that their products can treat or prevent COVID-19. In all, more than 160 companies/individuals have received such warnings regarding these scams, which you can see HERE.
The picture tonight is from a Dowagiac constituent with a hummingbird feeding off their deck “surrounded by nature during these challenging times.” If you would like your photo to be featured in a future Kitchen Table report, please send it HERE.
