WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Reps. Fred Upton (R-MI) and Debbie Dingell (D-MI) today introduced a bipartisan resolution in the U.S. House expressing support for designating February 1, 2020 as “Blue Star Mother’s Day.

February 1, 2020 marks the 78th anniversary of the first meeting of Blue Star Mothers in Flint, Michigan.

“Blue Star mothers make a huge sacrifice to our country while their sons and daughters serve in our nation’s Armed Forces. While their children serve our country valiantly, these mothers serve, in part, by raising strong Americans who keep us safe from threats, both foreign and domestic,” Upton said. “Celebrating the 78th anniversary of their first gathering, February 1 is a fitting day to once again take time to honor the Blue Star Mothers of America and recognize the invaluable contributions they make to our nation.”

“Throughout American history, millions of mothers of our nation’s servicemembers have made sacrifices to support our troops,” Dingell said. “Blue Star Mothers show strength and resilience and make our country stronger. We all must come together to support these strong women. Designating February 1st as Blue Star Mother’s Day recognizes their service and sacrifice.”

“The Blue Star Mothers of America thank and appreciate Congressmen Upton and Congresswoman Dingell for recognizing the importance of this day and for acknowledging the contributions the mothers of our military make in maintaining the morale of our troops, especially at this critical time,” said Elizabeth Bohannon, Blue Star Mothers President of the Department of Michigan.

There are currently 198 active chapters of the Blue Star Mothers of America representing thousands of military families throughout the United States. These groups provide support for active duty service personnel, promotes patriotism, assists Veterans organizations, and are available to assist in homeland volunteer efforts.

A similar resolution first passed the U.S. Senate in November.
