WASHINGTON, DC – U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today issued the following statement following the announcement that U.S. Labor Secretary Alex Acosta will resign:

“Jeffrey Epstein committed unspeakable and horrific crimes.

The individuals in this country who prey on the most vulnerable are simply evil. Their heinous crimes where they deceive our children, take advantage of their situations, and abuse them shake us to our core.

In Michigan, we saw firsthand how Larry Nassar’s horrific acts were allowed to go on for years.  In every instance - no matter who the predator is - we are obligated to do all we can to bring these criminals to justice.  Unfortunately, when he was a United States Attorney, Labor Secretary Alex Acosta demonstrated poor judgement while handling a plea deal with Jeffrey Epstein. No one should escape blame and as a consequence, I believe it is the right thing for the country that Mr. Acosta announced his resignation.”
