Upton announces Military Academy Appointments

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today announced that seven local students have received coveted appointments to military academies based on Upton’s recommendation.

“These students are our nation’s future leaders, and we could not be prouder of what they have accomplished already in their lives,” Upton said. “We also come together to thank them for their willingness to serve our country and help keep it safe. We look forward to seeing what’s next for these young men and women as they begin the next chapter of their lives.”

The students can be found below in alphabetical order:

Owen Grile has been extended an offer of appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point. Owen is from Otsego and is a senior at Otsego High School. He is a member of four varsity sports, including football, track, soccer, and swimming, and is also involved with National Honors Society and student council.

Mark Hiestand has been extended an offer of appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Mark is from Niles and is a senior at South Bend Saint Joseph High School. He was recruited to play football at the Air Force Academy and is a member of National Honor Society.

Jared Perez has been extended an offer of appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Jared is from Kalamazoo and is a senior at Plainwell High School. He is a member of the Tennis team and National Honors Society. He also participated in his church’s mission trip to Cuba.

Mary Podiak has been extended an offer of appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Mary is from Portage and attended Portage Central High School. She is currently a student at the University of Michigan. At U of M, Mary is a member of the Navy ROTC and also volunteers with the ROTC at the veterans hospital.

Clarissa Reckline has been extended an offer of appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Clarissa is from Baroda and is a senior at Lutheran High School. She is a member of the basketball, softball, and power lifting teams and is in the band. She’s also active in the school’s student council, international club, and National Honors Society. She participates in 4H and the Berrien County Youth Fair and received the 2018 U.S. Presidential Award for Volunteer Services.

Sheldon Shen has been extended an offer of appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. Sheldon is from Portage and is a senior at Portage Central High School. He is a member of the Varsity Polo and Swimming team and is a member of Interact and National Honor Society.

Kevin White has been extended an offer of appointment to the United States Naval Academy. Kevin is from Kalamazoo and attends Hargrave Military Academy. He is a member of four varsity sports, including swimming, football, track, and wrestling. He received the 2018 Wrestling Coach’s Award.
