U.S. Rep. Fred Upton, R-St. Joseph, today released the following statement after Speaker of the House Paul D. Ryan announced he would not seek re-election and retire at the end of his term:

“Today’s announcement is not surprising. His three teenagers and wife have seen him commute to D.C. virtually every week of their lives and he has slept nights in his office all his days. I was among those who urged a very reluctant Paul to step up and accept the nomination to become Speaker of the House because he is a bridge builder within our caucus. He has been a force in advancing our landmark, bipartisan 21st Century Cures legislation. His long-term priority – making our country more competitive by lowering the tax rates for all – has now been enacted. His family wants him back and I respect his decision and will always be grateful for his friendship and positive leadership.”
