WNDU: Congressman Upton tours local companies
Michigan Congressman Fred Upton has spent most of the week touring local companies, and Wednesday he made some stops in Michiana.
Wednesday morning, the Michigan republican visited Clark Testing Services in Buchanan. It's a company whose business he said has nearly doubled in the past three or four years.
Workers there test the value and safety of day-to-day products for major industries, like axles for agricultural companies or a piece of equipment for a mining company.
Upton said Clark Testing is a prime example of a company that has been able to expand, as more jobs start coming back to the area.
The congressman said Michigan's expertise in the auto industry is a big advantage now, as businesses look to hire skilled workers with experience in this field. "We've got a strength that really not a lot of the other communities have," Upton said. "... and so, it's been a good thing the last couple days as I've been talking to a lot of small business people, and they are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel, and it's not the locomotive coming their way."
The congressman also spoke about the recent spike in gas prices and said the increasing cost is the thing that threatens us most right now.
